Mail carriers didn’t always wear their iconic uniforms. In fact, the first uniform was introduced in 1868 — more than 200 years after mail was first sent across the American colonies!

Early carrier uniforms featured blue-gray garments with black trim and hats with a numbered badge. While the uniform has evolved for comfort and practicality, it continues to symbolize trust, authority, and the Postal Service’s commitment to connecting America.
